The art is the brainchild of Alexander Watanabe, a self-taught programmer, former student of architecture and an A.I. design specialist based in Japan. Alexander is an active member of the Cardano blockchain community and operates the MONAD Stake Pool. unsigned_algorithms, is Alexander’s first NFT project.

Cardano is a blockchain platform that is open-source, decentralized and uses proof-of-stake to achieve consensus. It facilitates peer-to-peer transactions with its cryptocurrency, ADA. CCardano is a blockchain platform that is open-source, decentralized and uses proof-of-stake to achieve consensus. It facilitates peer-to-peer transactions with its cryptocurrency, ADA. Cardano was founded in 2015 by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. It is the largest cryptocurrency to use proof-of-stake blockchain, which is considered a greener alternative to proof-of-work protocols like Bitcoin or Ethereum. As of December 2022, there were 2.5 million digital wallets on the Cardano blockchain.

The first NFTs were minted on Cardano in March 2022. By the beginning of February 2022, there were 2,947,438 NFTs minted on Cardano, 183,952 Cardano wallets holding at least 1 NFT, 47,601 wallets with at least 10 NFTs, 5,520 wallets with at least 100 NFTs, and 148 wallets with at least 1000 NFTs.

The 31,119 unsigned_algorithms NFT collection was released on May 29th, 2021. The collection sold out on July 28th, 2021. By January 2022, there has been 2.66 million ADA volume traded in the secondary unsig market.

unsigned_algorithm: generating from on-chain data

NFTs are a new and exciting feature of blockchain technology. The vast majority of NFTs consist of an image stored on a third-party website linked to the NFT that acts as a certificate of authenticity. What makes unsigned_algorithms stand apart as it is the first Cardano NFT to live entirely on-chain. The art is not so much the image, but rather the python code embedded in the metadata of the NFT. The art is not dependent on any external sites, and can be truly defined as Blockchain Medium Native Art. unsigned_algorithm NFTs is art that will exist, as long as the Cardano blockchain exists, mitigating any risk of third-party websites going off-line and deleting the NFT art.

Unsigs are a colour study inspired by the work of American artist Mark Rothko. Unsigs were also inspired by the work of the American artist of Sol LeWitt who created minimalist and conceptual art. LeWitt would often create the instructions for his art, and others would replicate it accordingly. In many ways, this is the same with unsigs. Watanabe created coded instructions that generate the art. As well, these instructions are stored in the metadata of the NFT, which others can use to create the images from. Because the art of unsigs is the code that lives on-chain, the images can be generated at any resolution

Perhaps the best way to understand the significance of the unsigned_algorithms collection is to see it in the light of the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan’s famous theory that “the medium is the message.” By making his art fully-on chain, Watanabe forces us to recognize the blockchain itself as the medium being used and therefore the message of his art. If the blockchain symbolizes humanity’s effort to create a decentralized equitable market system, then arguably unsigned_algorithms, celebrates this global movement more than any other NFT to date.
